Argonne OutLoud: Picture This: A Study in Picasso’s Paint

When art experts study the works of master painters, they scrutinize everything from composition and content to the brushstrokes and materials the artist used to convey a message about the subject, time, and society in which the work was created.

But when scientists peered into a painting by Pablo Picasso, their examination went many steps further—all the way down to the nanoscale. What did they find?

April 13, 2017 – Argonne physicist Volker Rose explains how the Advanced Photon Source, one of the brightest light sources in the world, revealed the real substance of some of Picasso’s paintings and paints.
