In June, Argonne National Laboratory’s Hispanic Latino Club (HLC) presented $6,000 in academic scholarships to students pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
The HLC’s Hispanic in Science Incentive Award is presented annually to two undergraduate or graduate students enrolled in STEM areas of study at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The 2014 scholarship award winners are:
- Mike Guevara, undergraduate general engineering major at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
- Viridiana Luna, undergraduate biology major at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Each student received a $1,000 academic scholarship to help defray the cost of tuition.
The Argonne Hispanic Latino Club STEM Scholar annual award is presented to graduating high school students who intend to declare a STEM major at a four-year university in the autumn. Each award is presented with a $1,000 academic scholarship to help defray the cost of tuition. This year, four students from Joliet Township High Schools were presented with the award:
- Guadalupe Aguirre, graduating senior at Joliet Central High School
- Marisol Campos, graduating senior at Joliet Central High School
- Daisy Diaz, graduating senior at Joliet West High School
- Brady Zabala, graduating senior at Joliet Central High School
Two Joliet businesses — El Ranchito and Taquerias Atotonilco — matched dollars with the Argonne Hispanic Latino Club to help fund the Argonne Hispanic Latino Club STEM Scholar awards. The HLC raises funds through donations from Argonne employees.
