Argonne microbial ecologist named to Crain’s Chicago Business’s 40 Under 40’ list

Argonne, Ill - Microbial ecologist Jack Gilbert has been honored in being named to the 2014 Crain’s Chicago Business 40 under 40” list, an annual compilation of proven leaders in their fields.

Gilbert was selected for the honor due to his work on the American Gut Project, which is collecting samples of bacteria from broad swaths of the U.S. population, analyzing the results and sending customized reports to each volunteer. We have little understanding of the bacteria that live there and what they do,” he says.

Gilbert has also been conducting microbiome research for years in homes, waterways, hospitals and cities, including work on the Home Microbiome Project, Hospital Microbiome Project, and other collaborative research efforts.

On Dec. 11, Gilbert will also lead a public discussion in presenting Invisible Influence: A Bacterial Guide to Your Health”, to be held at the Advanced Photon Source Auditorium on the Argonne campus.

Gilbert holds a Ph.D. in Marine Microbiology from the University of Nottingham, UK.
