The event, which will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., will be a day of fun and discovery for the whole family.

“The energy showcase will be great fun for everyone,” said Eric Isaacs, director of Argonne National Laboratory. “We love welcoming the community to the lab and having an opportunity to show off some of the great work we are doing to benefit our nation while inspiring interest in science, engineering and technology.”
The Energy Showcase will be similar to the traditional Argonne Open House but will be on a somewhat smaller scale, making it easier to experience all that the laboratory has to offer in a single day.
The Energy Showcase will feature interactive demos, exhibits and tours, giving attendees a unique opportunity to mingle with prominent energy researchers and innovators in a hands-on atmosphere. This is a great opportunity to learn more about Argonne’s research and talk with the laboratory’s leading experts.
Let your imagination soar as you learn about the wonders of science and engineering, explore new technologies and innovations and see Argonne’s energy research first-hand:
- Check out how computer modeling is helping to provide solutions to today’s challenges in energy storage, understand the mechanisms of chemical reactions and predict changes in the Earth’s climate.
- Tour Argonne’s Advanced Photon Source, one of the world’s largest X-ray synchrotrons, and see inside an experiment station.
- See ATLAS, the world’s first superconducting linear accelerator for heavy ions, where physicists study its inner workings of atomic nuclei.
- Discover how Argonne’s experts are developing the next generation of wind turbines, improving wind power forecasts, and integrating wind power into the energy market.
- Visit Argonne’s interactive smart grid display to see how electric cars will “talk” to the electric grid.
- Take a 70-year trip through Argonne’s nuclear history, with experts on hand to answer your questions and try your hand at controlling robots that safely handle spent nuclear fuel.
- Learn how to monitor your own neighborhood air quality and use a “carbon calculator” to determine your vehicle’s greenhouse gas emissions
The event will be held rain or shine. Free shuttle service will be provided, and food, drink and T-shirts will be available for purchase. Advance reservations are required, and visitors are welcome to take photos and videos of the event.
