Argonne program introduces girls to engineering

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory hosted its annual Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. IGED is a diversity outreach program designed to give 8th-grade girls an opportunity to learn about science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers.

At the event, girls receive personal contact with women engineers and scientists as they are introduced to engineering careers through several activities. The program will consist of an opening presentation to introduce engineering, followed by lab tours, demos, lunch with mentors and a hands-on design-and-build activity.

Students may participate in events such as facility tours, an exploration of scientific data, technology and energy expos, numerous scientific demonstrations and a competitive team challenge.

IGED was originally started in celebration of National Engineers Week and is held at the end of February each year.
