ARGONNE, Ill. – Argonne National Laboratory and University of Chicago theoretical chemist Gregory Voth has received the 2013 Award in Theoretical Chemistry from the Physical Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society.

The award citation recognizes Voth’s contributions to the ​“development and application of powerful new theoretical and computational methods in the study of biomolecules, liquids, materials and quantum mechanical systems.”

Voth’s current research focuses on the multiscale theory and simulation of biomolecular and material phenomena, including protein assembly, membrane-protein interactions, charge transport, complex liquids and nanoparticle self-assembly.

On the biological level, Voth and his colleagues have investigated the structure and behavior of actin filaments, microtubules, biological membranes and membrane proteins, nucleic acids, peptides, carbohydrates and viral capsids. For materials, he has extensively studied ionic liquids, proton exchange membranes, and more recently energy storage devices.

Voth received his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology in 1987 and has held his current endowed chair at the University of Chicago and senior scientist position at Argonne since 2010. He is a member and fellow of the American Chemical Society, American Physical Society, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Biophysical Society.
