Press Release | Argonne National Laboratory

Cristina Negri named Environmental Science division director

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Argonne National Laboratory has named M. Cristina Negri the next director of the laboratory’s Environmental Science Division (EVS), effective August 14, 2017.

During her more than 20-year career at Argonne in the Energy Systems Division, Negri has conducted and directed laboratory to full-scale multidisciplinary projects developing technologies and concepts for environmental remediation and stewardship, including soil remediation and water treatment. Her work at Argonne has also involved research focusing on sustainable technologies for urban environmental improvement.

Negri’s background and areas of research focus make her an ideal candidate to lead EVS’ overall day-to-day management, strategic direction, growth and vision into both the near and long-term future.

Negri’s current research focuses on the integration of bioenergy systems within working agricultural landscapes to address the food, energy, water, and land nexus. Her work has concentrated on developing sustainable, multifunctional landscape concepts, which aim, by design, at the creation of ecosystems services. Negri’s interests are in systems approaches where industrial ecology concepts are applied to water and land management and green infrastructure. She is also a senior Fellow at the Energy Policy Institute and at the Institute for Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago, and a Fellow of the Northwestern-Argonne Institute for Science and Engineering.

Argonne National Laboratory seeks solutions to pressing national problems in science and technology. The nation’s first national laboratory, Argonne conducts leading-edge basic and applied scientific research in virtually every scientific discipline. Argonne researchers work closely with researchers from hundreds of companies, universities, and federal, state and municipal agencies to help them solve their specific problems, advance America’s scientific leadership and prepare the nation for a better future. With employees from more than 60 nations, Argonne is managed by UChicago Argonne, LLC for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States and is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. For more information, visit the Office of Science website.
