MCS division researchers help develop new sequencing analysis service

The Argonne/University of Chicago Computation Institute has announced a new sequencing analysis service called Globus Genomics.

The Globus Genomics team includes two members of Argonne’s Mathematics and Computer Science Division: Ravi Madduri, software development specialist/project manager, and Ian Foster, director of the University of Chicago/Argonne Computation Institute and Argonne Distinguished Fellow.

By integrating state-of-the-art algorithms, data management tools, a graphical workflow environment, and an elastic computing infrastructure, Globus Genomics simplifies genomics research. Large data sets can be transferred rapidly by using Globus Online. Running in a cloud-based environment means that storage and compute can be elastically scaled up and down on demand. Indeed, Globus Genomics and Globus Online were recently cited in Nature as one of the approaches being explored by biologists and computer scientists to handle genome analysis on the cloud.

Globus Genomics is part of the broader Globus family of research data management solutions developed at the Computation Institute. Development of Globus Genomics is supported by funding from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the Department of Energy.
