Center for Structural Genomics of Infectious Diseases

CSGID
CSGID applies state-of-the-art high-throughput structural biology technologies to experimentally characterize the three-dimensional atomic structure of targeted proteins from certain pathogens causing emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases.

The Center for Structural Genomics of Infectious Diseases (CSGID) is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The goal is to apply state-of-the-art high-throughput structural biology technologies to experimentally characterize the three dimensional atomic structure of targeted proteins from pathogens in the NIAID Category A-C priority lists and organisms causing emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. The three-dimensional structure of proteins will assist drug design and development by yielding direct insights into the target molecular mechanisms, in interaction with other biological molecules, or with synthetic compounds, in order to improve selectivity, specificity and optimize drug development in a rational way.

The CSGID is a consortium of eight institutions:

  • Northwestern University
  • University of Chicago
  • Purdue University
  • Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute
  • University of Calgary
  • University of Virginia
  • UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas
  • Washington University School of Medicine

The CSGID utilizes facilities at Argonne’s Biosciences Division and the Advanced Photon Source user facility for protein production, crystallization, data collection, and structure determination. The consortium has determined over 1,000 structures.
