Machine and Equipment Design

Our portfolio

A shielded cell constructed with 12-inch steel walls for remote handling of radioactive materials. Physical access limitations drove the bolted construction design of many 3-inch plates and field assembly of the cell.
A fully automated testing machine indexes and adjusts a drop dart to allow impact testing of 16 individual cells in a structural extrusion used for the NOvA experiment. Automation greatly reduced the QC cycle time and effort.
A system developed for testing the effectiveness of a high-pressure sprayer that decontaminates equipment. This system, developed in collaboration with a nuclear engineer, uses a complex mechanism to controlling the spray path and angle.
The Mu2e Experiment magnetic field mapper positions hall probes within a ~1.7m solenoid magnet bore. The mapper is fabricated from completely non-magnetic components and includes a carbon fiber shaft to dampen vibrations of the front sensor mount.
We designed a motion system for positioning the target at the end of the 2000 lbs Dynamic Compression System gun to within 10 microns. The motion system had 5 degrees of freedom that moved the gun and target together as a unit.

Our groups possess a wide range of experience and skill in the broad category of machine design. This includes one-of-a-kind machines and fixtures that allow scientists from countless disciplines to pursue world-class discoveries.  Systems often include clever mechanisms for repeated motions or positioning and can be fully or semi-automated depending upon the application. We also design or modify special purpose enclosures including gloveboxes and hot cells. We are particularly experienced with the unique environments and constraints present in many scientific applications which drive material choices and fabrication methods.
