Characterizing water use in the biofuel supply chain through development of water footprints

Water is an increasingly valued resource and the production of biofuels and biochemicals consumes water and can affect water quality. These impacts can be substantial under climate change. Research at Argonne aims to characterize water use in the biofuel supply chain through development of water footprints at the geospatial scale. Water sustainability is further addressed by evaluating the adoption of Best Management and Practices (BMPs) and landscape design to reduce feedstock production impact on nutrient and sediments through watershed modeling under historic and future climate scenarios.
