Scalable Functional Materials: Performance and Durability Through Scalable Material Structuring

Manufacturing Science & Engineering Initiative Research

Abstract:: The Scaled Nanotechnology group at HRL Laboratories is focused on developing new, multifunctional materials and coatings by controlling nano/microscale architecture to tailor properties such as wetting, heat transfer, ice nucleation, surface adhesion, reaction thermodynamics, kinetics, color, and elasticity. We are focused on using scalable processes to rapidly mature technologies from fundamental discovery to commercial products. This seminar will provide an overview of HRL Laboratories along with a few specific areas of interest related to advanced coatings (passive icephobic and antifouling) and new energy storage concepts.

Bio: Jason Graetz is a senior scientist and manager at HRL Laboratories where he leads the Scaled Nanotechnologies Department, which is focused on developing scalable multifunctional materials and coatings for automotive, aerospace and defense applications. He received his Ph.D. in materials science from Caltech.
