Abstract: Students from underrepresented populations, including those at minority serving institutions have traditionally faced many barriers that have resulted in their being under-represented in high energy physics. These barriers include lack of research infrastructure and opportunities, insufficient mentoring, lack of support networks, and financial hardship. The U.S. CMS SPRINT program addresses these barriers via a 10-week paid summer internship program that incorporates software and instrumentation training, a series of lectures covering a broad range of topics, and a structured research experience. U.S. CMS is collaboration of 54 U.S. universities and institutes with about 1200 graduate students, PhD physicists and technical personnel. In addition, there are a few hundred undergraduate students from these institutions who are engaged in research. It is committed to diversity and inclusion and the internship maps to its DEI action plan about identity formation and community engagement.
