Argonne joins national consortium to advance 3-D printing

Argonne National Laboratory is proud to announce a new partnership with America Makes. Argonne joined America Makes in June and will attend the America Makes Technical Review & Exchange (TRX) on July 19-21, 2016, at GE Global Research in Niskayuna, NY.

America Makes is a national accelerator for additive manufacturing and 3-D printing as well as the flagship Institute for the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI).

Argonne is expanding its additive manufacturing research with new projects analyzing metal AM laser sintering microstructure formation and creating models of the microstructure formation to accelerate the optimization of additive manufacturing in U.S. economy. Argonne’s suite of cutting-edge research tools, expertise, and diverse research staff will be joining the America Makes community of more than 150 members who represent academia, industry, non-profits, and governments.

Scientists at Argonne are partnering with industry and other government agencies to conduct research including powder aging and deposition melt studies using hard X-rays, and the development of reduced order models used for process control. These studies will help
find solutions to top challenges in additive manufacturing including:

  • Benchmarking of materials and processes,
  • Improving reproducibility,
  • Defect elimination and high reproducibility rates of parts,
  • Reduction of high levels of waste, and
  • Corrosion control.
