Argonne wins HPC Innovation Excellence Award

Argonne National Laboratory was one of seven new winners of the HPC Innovation Excellence Award. Announced by International Data Corporation at the ISC 14 supercomputer industry conference in Leipzig, Germany, the award recognizes noteworthy achievements by users of high-performance computing (HPC) technologies.

Researchers from Argonne, in collaboration with Caterpillar Inc. and Convergent Science, carried out large internal combustion engine simulations involving fine spatial and temporal resolutions; high fidelity; and robust two-phase flow, spray, turbulence, combustion, and emission models.

The simulations have enabled dramatic reductions in development timescales,” said Ray Bair, a senior computational scientist in Argonne’s Mathematics and Computer Science Division and one of the people involved in the project. Indeed, Caterpillar engineers predict that the number of multicylinder tests will be reduced by a factor of 2 — a potential cost savings of up to $750,000 per year.

International Data Corporation (IDC) is a global provider of market intelligence, advisory services, and events for the information technology, telecommunications, and consumer technology markets. According to the press release, by honoring scientific successes in high-performance computing, the IDC program seeks to help users understand the benefits of adopting HPC and to justify HPC investments.
