Madduri will speak during the shared session on Cloud Computing and Next-Generation Sequencing Informatics.
In the interview, Madduri talks about the challenges of big data facing the life sciences. With the enormous output coming from next-generation sequencing systems and major facilities such as the Large Hadron Collider, researchers find themselves spending considerable time in the IT aspects – setting up analysis pipelines, figuring out how to move data – rather than in analysis of the data itself and the discovery of new science.
Madduri explains how “software/infrastructure/platform as a service” can address this problem. For example, researchers can now use Globus Genomics for integrated services for data management and data sharing, while obtaining the needed computing resources from the Amazon EC2 cloud. Madduri sees this “separation of concerns” as critical to enabling transformative science.
