Chien is the William Eckhardt Distinguished Service Professor in Computer Science at the University of Chicago and a senior computer scientist in the Mathematics and Computer Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory.

The ACM e-Energy 2023 conference is a major forum for researchers working in energy-efficient computing and communication systems

Chien and his colleague Liuzixuan Lin won the award for their paper titled ​“Adapting datacenter capacity for greener datacenters and grid.” In the award-winning paper the researchers explore a critical problem facing cloud datacenters: how to adapt capacity to reduce the operational carbon emissions. They propose PlanShare, a new approach in which datacenters create a 24-hour adapted capacity plan and then share the plan with the grid. PlanShare dramatically reduces the datacenter carbon emissions, lowers average power prices, and enables more predictable capacity from planning.
