Members of Argonne’s Mathematics and Computer Science (MCS) Division showed once again that they can do more than develop code, analyze data, and devise numerical methods. They can run.

For the second year in succession, the MCS Division took home the trophy – and it is a large one – in the annual divisional championship 3.3-mile run hosted by the Argonne Running Club on September 18, 2019.

In the competition, divisional team members were scored cross-country style. The first runner of the team to cross the finish line received 1 point, the second 2 points, and so on. The points for the top three runners of each team were summed, and the team with the lowest score won.

Running for the MCS Division team were Rob Latham, a senior scientific programmer, and Anirudh Subramanyan and Arindam Fadikar, both postdoctoral appointees.

“It’s all in the numbers,” said Latham. ​“If you don’t have at least three runners, you don’t have a chance. So it’s a good motivation for divisions to get their people out there.”

The Division Championship Race began in 1982. Although the history is spotty, this is the sixth (known) year that the MCS Division has won the trophy in the running competition.
