Johann Rudi has been awarded the 2018 J.H. Wilkinson Fellowship in Scientific Computing at Argonne National Laboratory. He joins the Mathematics and Computer Science Division, where he is developing parallel methods and algorithms for challenging applications on extreme-scale computers.

“I am honored to be named the 2018 Wilkinson Fellow and delighted to be working with experts in the MCS division at the intersection of applied mathematics, numerical methods, and high-performance computing,” Rudi said. ​“I am particularly interested in developing methods and algorithms for complex implicit systems involving partial differential equations that can scale out to extreme-scale computer systems with millions of cores, and I look forward to applying such solvers to previously infeasible scientific problems, taking advantage of the superb resources at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility.”

Rudi received his Ph.D. from the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences, the University of Texas at Austin. His work has been recognized by two major awards: the ACM-IEEE CS George Michael Memorial HPC Fellowship in 2016 and, in a central role among an international group of collaborators, the ACM Gordon Bell Prize in 2015. Both awards acknowledged Rudi’s outstanding work in developing parallel extreme-scale implicit solvers for complex nonlinear partial differential equations tackling one of the ​“Grand Research Questions” in Earth sciences: understanding Earth’s mantle convection.

The appointment as Wilkinson Fellow lasts a year and can be extended an additional year.  Benefits include salary, moving expenses, and a professional travel allowance.
