The awardees are selected ​“based on their exemplary achievements; support of diversity, equity, and inclusion in their community; and commitment to industrial and applied mathematics, computational science, and data science.”

The three-year Fellowship – a joint commitment by the Mathematically Gifted & Black (MGB) and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) – provides support for professional activities and career development, including workshops, committee shadowing and thematic luncheons.

Ngom grew up in Senegal and studied in France before receiving her Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2019. Her research interests include numerical analysis and partial differential equations.

“I am proud and honored to receive this fellowship,” Ngom said. ​“It will give me opportunities to network with other SIAM members and the new Fellows and to explore ideas about research developments in applied mathematics.”

Ngom’s recent work involves targeted adaptive design, or TAD, a new method that optimally searches parameter spaces, an important requirement in advanced manufacturing and materials design. Ngom and her colleagues have also created a scalable data-driven version of TAD based on a Gaussian process that takes advantage of both the GPyTorch library and the computational power of the ThetaGPU supercomputer at the Argonne Leadership Computing Facility to run on graphics processing units.
