Alex B. Martinson

Chemist

Alex Martinson is an Argonne Chemist who founded and directs Argonne’s selective interface reactions research program.

Biography

Alex Martinson is a Chemist in the Materials Science Division, Emerging Materials Group. He also serves as Deputy Director of Science for the Advanced Materials for Energy-Water Systems Center. The aim of his research is to discover and leverage technologically relevant surface chemistries and optoelectronic processes that occur at the interface between materials. His research tests the limits of what is possible in digital materials synthesis and device fabrication at length scales approaching the atomic level. His group develops precision synthesis methods with application to solar energy conversion, water-energy systems, detectors, and catalysis through the design, modeling, and fabrication of heterogeneous surfaces, solar fuels platforms, and advanced membrane materials. Disruptive designs are enabled through the precise spatial and chemical control afforded by atomic layer deposition (ALD). His studies explore the intersection of selective surface synthesis, thin film calorimetry, photoelectrochemistry, and precision cluster catalysis in order to study their synergies and reveal the shortcomings of our control over energy and matter.
