Dan Carlson

Directorate Operations Officer

Biography

Dan Carlson is the Directorate Operations Officer of Argonne National Laboratory’s Nuclear Technologies and National Security and Advanced Energy Technologies directorates. He was formerly the director of the Lab’s Experimental Operations and Facilities Division which provides engineering and experimental technical support services to a variety of customers across Argonne and manages the directorate’s accelerator facilities.

Previously, Dan was the Director of the Nuclear and Waste Management Division. Under his leadership the division enacted process improvements to achieve a 25% decrease in operating costs, de-inventoried and downgraded the Alpha Gamma Hot Cell Facility (AGHCF) to Hazard Category 3, and developed the CURIE system for site-wide radioactive material management. Dan also held the positions of Nuclear Operations Manager, AGHCF Manager, and Assistant Facility Manager before becoming director.

Dan’s other experiences before joining Argonne include managing engineering efforts for Fortune 500 medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturing companies. Dan also served as a nuclear propulsion officer in the U.S. Navy, stationed aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72) during the Iraq War.

Dan holds a Master’s degree in Engineering Management from Old Dominion University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Valparaiso University.
