Biography

Jessica Burgess is the Education Outreach Lead, overseeing the development and coordination of K-through-college outreach activities and STEM competitions that align to Argonne research. These informal learning experiences inspire, excite, and connect youth to STEM experiences and Argonne. She also oversees the recruitment and training of on-site scientists and engineers for the education volunteer program. As a personal goal, Jessica wishes to promote science literacy and make science accessible to everyone.

Jessica has had a love for science and creative problem-solving since a very early age, and she prided herself on being a female in mostly male dominated engineering and science clubs throughout her school years. This led to her receiving a B.S. in Marine Biology from Eckerd College as well as a post-baccalaureate certificate in Zoo and Aquarium Studies from Western Illinois University. For 11 years, before coming to Argonne in 2016, she held various formal and informal education roles, engaging thousands of youth and families every year in STEM activities, shows, and events. She has also presented on numerous STEM topics.

Jessica is a member of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), the Illinois Science Teachers Association (ISTA), and the National Association of Biology Teachers (NABT). Outside Argonne, Jessica has volunteered at institutions such as Shedd Aquarium.
