Chief Diversity Officer/Director, Leadership Institute

Biography

As Chief Diversity Officer, Dr. Philip T. Anderson is a member of the Laboratory’s leadership team. His work focuses on the development and implementation of a Lab-wide diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility strategy; assessing the climate and culture of the laboratory; employee and leadership development; and organizational development strategies.

Dr. Anderson has served as Director of the Argonne Leadership Institute since 2019, leading the Institute’s expansion. He oversees the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility Office as well as the Learning and Organization Development function.

A scholar and practitioner of organizational development for over 20 years, Dr. Anderson has led leadership, organization development and education efforts for a variety of private industry, not-for-profit and government sector organizations.

For four years prior to joining Argonne, Dr. Anderson was the Dean and Chief Academic Officer for the College of Business & Management at Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee, where he provided leadership and direction toward achieving the college’s academic and strategic goals, aligning all programs with a new value proposition, and restructuring the college to increase effectiveness by over 20 percent.

As the Senior Director of Business Transformation at ManpowerGroup, Inc., Dr. Anderson was responsible for the change management of all strategic projects for the enterprise-wide transformation initiative for the Americas. Philip also served as the Global Organization Development Director at Abbott Laboratories, leading the company’s cultural assessment process and organizational transformation. He also led global Organization Development interventions and managed U.S. Training Operations within Abbott Laboratories’ Diagnostics Division. 

Retiring from the United States Army after 20 years of active duty service in 1998, Dr. Anderson’s military career culminated as a Training and Organizational Effectiveness Advisor for the Army Readiness Group at Fort Sheridan, Illinois.

Dr. Anderson is a member of the Academy of Management, Organization Development Network, and the Society for Human Resource Management.  His work has been published in a number of books and professional journals and he serves on the Editorial Board of the Organization Development Review – the leading professional Organizational Development publication. 

Dr. Anderson has a doctorate in organization development from Benedictine University, a Master of Education in human resource development leadership from the University of Illinois at Urbana, a bachelor’s degree in workforce education from Southern Illinois University and a certificate in higher education leadership from Harvard University. He is also a Certified Diversity Professional, a credential issued by the National Diversity Council.
