Biography

Thomas Veselka is a Principal Computational and Energy Systems Engineer with nearly 40 years of experience at Argonne National Laboratory.. He has provided technical support and managed projects related to electric utility systems, power markets and the environment for over 39 years. His work includes extensive hydropower systems and power market analyses for both the Western Area Power Administration and the Bureau of Reclamation. He has performed numerous economic evaluations of hydropower resources at the Glen Canyon Dam, Flaming Gorge Dam, the Aspinall Cascade, North Platte Power District, and the Central Valley Project. Thomas has been involved in numerous international projects providing analyses and technical assistance for hydropower related projects sponsored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the World Bank, and the United States Energy Association (USEA), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). 

Mr. Veselka also builds optimization and simulation tools of the electric power industry. Models developed by teams lead by Mr. Veselka are used extensively at Argonne and by other organizations, both domestically and internationally, for a wide range of energy, economic, and environmental applications ranging from long-term planning to hourly operations. His models are currently used for daily, monthly, and annual power systems operations and for formulating market transactions, customer offers, and long-term plans. Mr. Veselka is an invited speaker at numerous conferences, workshops and training courses.
