The model year 2013 Toyota Prius PHV is the first production iteration of Toyota's hybrid system to be produced as a plug in electric vehicle, with a 4.4kWh lithium-ion battery. This vehicle includes a 1.8L Atkinson-cycle engine, two electric machines (one motor, one generator) with a power-split device used to control the blended allocation of energy between the two power paths. The 2013 Toyota Prius PHV was evaluated as part of the Advanced Vehicles Technology Evaluation (AVTE) under the funding and guidance of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).
