Argonne researchers are working on multiple methods to reduce greenhouse gases in the rail industry.
Railroads are an efficient way to move freight across the country. However, despite this, the North American rail fleet emits approximately 87.6 billion pounds of carbon dioxide each year, a major driver of climate change. Argonne is targeting progress that can be made in this sector by researching hydrogen and other low-carbon fuels, such as hydrous ethanol, to decarbonize locomotive engines.
