Dual-Fuel Combustion

Investigating the operation of dual-fuel engines on two fuels simultaneously to provide the optimum fuel for each specific operating condition

Optimized dual-fuel combustion can improve engine efficiency and corresponding vehicle fuel efficiency, while maintaining (or reducing) engine emissions. It can also facilitate efficient use of low-carbon fuels such as natural gas. Argonne researchers explore dual-fuel combustion strategies for a variety of platforms, ranging from light-duty to heavy-duty engines.

Argonne’s dual-fuel combustion research investigates the operation of dual-fuel engines on two fuels simultaneously to provide the optimum fuel for each specific operating condition. By simultaneously using two fuels having differing advantageous properties, and varying the relative quantities of each fuel depending on the operating condition, researchers can optimize combustion over what was possible with each fuel individually. In addition, using two fuels can enable operation with some advanced low-temperature combustion strategies, unlocking the potential to increase engine efficiency dramatically while maintaining low engine-out emissions levels.

Argonne has significant experience in and understanding of the development and study of advanced combustion concepts. Together with the lab’s high-technology engine test cells, comprehensive suite of instrumentation, and specialized measurement equipment needed to understand and develop these combustion strategies, Argonne offers an unparalleled combination of fundamental science expertise, tools, and facilities with which to perform this work.
