The Argonne Energy Technology and Security (AETS) Fellowship is an exciting and unique opportunity to lead and contribute to cutting-edge applied research that develops and uses artificial intelligence components for science and engineering applications in the energy and global security space. The proposals should demonstrate short and long-term impact on the target applications. Fellows work closely with an Argonne sponsor to pursue their research interests. Fellows are hired as an Argonne Scholar with full benefits, highly competitive salary and a generous professional allowance. Fellows may renew their appointments on an annual basis for up to 3 years, with the possibility of retention.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Ph.D. conferred within three years at the time of application or completion of Ph.D. requirements by commencement of appointment
  • Experience in using leadership-class CPU and hybrid CPU/GPU supercomputers for large-scale computationally intensive simulations and data analysis
  • Experience in developing data intensive machine learning frameworks (using TensorFlow, PyTorch, Flux, etc.) on advanced architectures to advance science, engineering, and technological developments
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills to contribute to creative solutions to complex problems
  • Skilled in communication skills, both verbal and written at all levels of the organization
  • Collaborative skills, including the ability to work well with other labs, universities, computing centers, and industry
  • Evidence of academic achievement with potential for technical and research leadership.
  • Research in areas that align with Argonne’s mission

To be considered for the Argonne Energy Technology and Security Fellowship, candidates must apply through Requisition 414475. Applicants must read the detailed applicant instructions before applying.

Briefly, complete application packages will include:

  • Sponsor nomination form completed and submitted by your Argonne sponsor. Sponsors should read the detailed guidance for completing the nomination form
  • Research proposal and project plan submitted using the research template. Please review the guidance for using the template
  • Three letters of recommendation – refer to applicant instructions for guidance
  • CV uploaded through the application link
  • Graduate transcripts – refer to applicant instructions for acceptable format

Review Process and Tentative Timeline

  • AET and NTNS directorate-wide committee reviews applications and provides initial ranking (March-April)
  • Top candidates interviewed via Teams (May-June)
  • Sponsors of top candidates interviewed by committee (May-June)
  • Committee advises AET and NTNS Associate Laboratory Directors on final rankings (June-July)
  • Finalists notified by late July
