Highlights of the RSC Faraday Discussion on Nanoparticle Synthesis and Assembly

In the nearly hundred-year history of the Royal Society of Chemistry Faraday Discussion conference, only two meetings had been held in the United States before this meeting at Argonne National Laboratory on April 20-22, 2015.

The conference focused on the topic of nanoparticle synthesis and assembly, an exciting research area that has seen many remarkable scientific breakthroughs during the past two decades. It was co-sponsored by Kansas State University, Argonne s Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM), and Cogent Inc., with 125 attendees coming from 23 countries. Xiao-Min Lin of CNM’s EMMD group was a member of the Scientific Organizing Committee.

The CNM organized a facility tour and many conference attendees participated. The efforts of several CNM staff are acknowledged for their efforts with this successful tour, including Martin Holt, Julie Emery, Ron Tollner, Andrew DiLullo, and Anand Bhattacharya.

Details of the program can be found here.

Argonne’s summary can be found here.

CNM Participants

  • Argonne Nanoscientists Yugang Sun (NST) and Elena V. Shevchenko (NST) chaired sessions and provided findings on new routes to control nanoparticle synthesis.
  • Argonne Nanoscientist Subramanian Sankaranarayanan (NST) gave an invited discussion on coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations of nanoparticles and chaired a session on how magnetic fields can be used to drive the assembly of lipid-coated iron oxide nanoparticles into microfilaments that display remarkable flexibility and self-healing properties.
  • Nanoscientist Xiao-Min Lin (NST) chaired a session on the self-assembly of nanoparticles.
