For more than a decade, Thomas Wallner, Section Manager for Fuels, Engine and Aftertreatment Research at Argonne, has been involved with many transportation research areas at the laboratory. A mechanical engineer by training, Wallner arrived at Argonne in March 2005 as a postdoctoral appointee to study hydrogen engines. Since then, Wallner’s research has broadened into other fuels - natural gas, gasoline, diesel, and alcohol - as well as mobility, engine design and fuel simulation.

In April, Wallner was chosen as a Fellow by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) International – the highest level of SAE membership offered to fewer than 20 researchers each year. Wallner was recognized at two events during the WCX17: SAE World Congress Experience (formerly known as the SAE World Congress) in Detroit in early April.

This latest honor is one of many earned by Wallner, who has nine other awards, a patent, and has published more than 40 peer-reviewed technical papers. He recently completed a term as Chair of the SAE’s Advanced Power Source Committee. Wallner also serves as a consultant for test cell design and layout for internal combustion engines and an adjunct faculty member at Michigan Technological University.
