Wildebeest 5G Project

5G is designed to operate on higher bands of the electromagnetic spectrum, while adding more software programmability and better data transmission in the architecture.

These new design patterns open the opportunity for using 5G as a scientific instrument for meteorological measurements. However, this opportunity comes with challenges as 5G signals can cause interference with meteorological instruments. To better understand the tradeoffs of using 5G for science, we propose to explore approaches to leverage 5G infrastructure as a scientific instrument for detecting atmospheric phenomena (specifically rain) and understand the effects of 5G signals in meteorological instruments.
