Wind Forecast Improvement Project (WFIP-3)

Argonne, along with NOAA and several other DOE laboratories, industry and university partners have been a part of the DOE sponsored Wind Forecast Improvement Project (WFIP) since 2011.

This private-public research program leverages multiscale observations from the public and private sector to improve understanding of the meteorological phenomena that affect wind energy production. WFIP is aimed at demonstrating improvements in the accuracy of short-term wind forecasts due to assimilation of these additional observations and evaluating the economic value of the improvements in environmental conditions of various complexities, from the Southern Great Plains (WFIP-1) to Columbia River Basin (WFIP-2) and to the east coast offshore wind development areas (WFIP-3).
