Weather and Climate

Outdoors in the Chicago area

The Midwest region of the United States experiences all four seasons (although spring and fall are notoriously short).

Temperatures fluctuate with the seasons: It’s generally cold in winter, hot in summer, and temperate but rainy in spring and fall.

Severe weather

Thunderstorms — heavy rain accompanied by thunder, lightning and gusty winds — are fairly common in the spring, summer and fall. They can also be accompanied by power outages and flooding, so be prepared and stay informed.

Tornados are possible in the area, especially in spring. If a tornado is sighted, warning sirens will be activated. The sirens are tested every first Tuesday of every month at 10:00 a.m.

Argonne has designated shelter areas for severe weather and an alert system that will keep you informed via text, email and telephone. Argonne’s safety training will ensure that you know what to do and where to go in case of a severe weather threat.

Severe Weather or Closure
