February 2020 Employees of the Month

Scott Massow and Jason Clark are recognized as PSE Employees of the Month

The Physical Sciences and Engineering (PSE) Employees of the Month program recognizes two individuals each month—one programmatic and one operations—based on the excellence of their work and demonstration of Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity and Teamwork.

February 2020 PSE Employee of the Month – operations category

  • Scott Massow, from PSE’s Nanoscience and Technology (NST) division, took the lead in facilitating an upgrade to the cleanroom hazardous gas sensor and software system for the Center for Nanoscale Materials (CNM), a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science User Facility. He helped minimize disruption during installation and transition and interfaced with both the software vendor and Argonne’s Fire Department. He also worked with IT staff to monitor the status of cleanrooms remotely. Massow leads CNM’s hazardous gas response team (HGRT) and supervised a workshop to familiarize staff with new features relevant to the cleanroom. From procurement through installation and testing, he managed the project efficiently and successfully, demonstrating Argonne’s Core Values of Impact, Safety and Teamwork.

February 2020 PSE Employee of the Month – programmatic category

  • Jason Clark, form the Physics (PHY) division, demonstrated the Core Value of Impact through his hard work to finish building the beamlines in Target Area 1, a tandem hall in the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS), a DOE Office of Science User Facility. Area 1 is now the newest target area for low-energy Californium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) beams. Thanks to Clark’s efforts, users and collaborators from various institutions, including Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Michigan State University, have already benefited from the devices, exploring the physics of neutron-rich beams provided by the CARIBU source.

Each month, the PSE Associate Laboratory Director and Division Directors review PSE Employees of the Month nominations and select recipients. All Argonne employees are eligible for nomination, including people within PSE and those who work with PSE. All PSE staff, postdocs and students are welcome to submit nominations. The call for nominations opens on the first of each month.

Argonne National Laboratory seeks solutions to pressing national problems in science and technology. The nation’s first national laboratory, Argonne conducts leading-edge basic and applied scientific research in virtually every scientific discipline. Argonne researchers work closely with researchers from hundreds of companies, universities, and federal, state and municipal agencies to help them solve their specific problems, advance America’s scientific leadership and prepare the nation for a better future. With employees from more than 60 nations, Argonne is managed by UChicago Argonne, LLC for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States and is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. For more information, visit https://energy.gov/science.
