March 2023 PSE Employees of the Month

Thomas Reid and Jie Xu recognized as March 2023 PSE Employees of the Month

The Physical Sciences and Engineering (PSE) Employees of the Month program recognizes individuals based on the excellence of their work and demonstration of Argonne’s Core Values: Impact, Safety, Respect, Integrity and Teamwork.

March 2023 PSE Employee of the Month — Operations category

  • Thomas Reid, an engineer in Argonne’s Physics division, is recognized for his extraordinary self-directed effort related to the management, maintenance, upgrade and public relations for the joint Argonne/Fermilab cavity processing facility in Building 208. Reid completed more than a dozen maintenance and upgrade activities, many of these long overdue after nearly 17 years of facility operations. Reid also engaged with senior Argonne management to highlight the cavity facility in the new Argonne informational forum SOLVE (Sharing our Lessons and Valuable Experiences). Reid’s efforts demonstrate Argonne’s Core Values of Impact, Safety, Integrity and Teamwork.

March 2023 PSE Employees of the Month – Programmatic category

  • Jie Xu, an assistant scientist in Argonne’s Nanoscience and Technology division, received two high profile awards this month. For her distinctive contributions toward interfacing materials for multi-inter-trans disciplinary fields of science, engineering and technology, Xu received the International Association of Advanced Materials Scientist Medal. She was also selected as a 2023 Polymeric Materials: Science and Engineering Early Investigator Honoree by the American Chemical Society. Both of these awards recognize Xu’s work in developing an AI-integrated automated laboratory to accelerate the discovery of functional polymers for sustainability and electronics, and the achievements speak to Xu’s ongoing demonstration of Argonne’s Core Values of Integrity and Impact.

Each month, the PSE Associate Laboratory Director and Division Directors review PSE Employees of the Month nominations and select recipients. All Argonne employees are eligible for nomination, including people within PSE and those who work with PSE. All PSE staff, postdocs and students are welcome to submit nominations.

Argonne National Laboratory seeks solutions to pressing national problems in science and technology. The nation’s first national laboratory, Argonne conducts leading-edge basic and applied scientific research in virtually every scientific discipline. Argonne researchers work closely with researchers from hundreds of companies, universities, and federal, state and municipal agencies to help them solve their specific problems, advance America’s scientific leadership and prepare the nation for a better future. With employees from more than 60 nations, Argonne is managed by UChicago Argonne, LLC for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science is the single largest supporter of basic research in the physical sciences in the United States and is working to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time. For more information, visit https://energy.gov/science.
