Student internship opportunities

The following internship opportunities are part of the Minority Serving Institutions Partnership Program (MSIPP) of the DOE Office of Environmental Management. The programs will be held at Argonne for 10 weeks starting May 31, 2021. Applications are due January 29, 2021. Eligible students include those working towards STEM undergraduate or graduate degrees at an accredited Minority Serving Institution (MSI).

  • Water sustainability for renewable fuels. During this internship, a student will evaluate water resource conservation strategies for irrigation and energy production. More information can be found here.  

  • Risk analysis framework for assessing plastics in the environment. The accumulation of discarded plastics in the environment pose a threat to ecosystem functions and services. This internship will provide an opportunity for a student to conduct research to help mitigate these threats to society and to promote a circular economy. More information can be found here.  

  • Evaluation of potential leaching from landfill barriers under different climate scenarios. A major challenge in landfill design is that water often seeps through barriers, saturating the waste and impacting groundwater. During this internship, a student will leverage a computer code, developed at Argonne National Laboratory, to evaluate the long-term performance of different barriers under various climate scenarios. NSF NRT Graduate Student Program

A grant for a National Science Foundation Research Traineeship (NRT) awarded to the University of Chicago (UChicago) will train graduate students in AI-enabled molecular engineering of materials and systems related to water, energy and sustainability. Students will be co-advised by a team consisting of a UChicago faculty member, an Argonne scientist, and an industry advisor.

The opportunity to participate is open to current and incoming UChicago graduate students at the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering, as well as those in the university’s programs for computer science and social science.
