Photoinjector Laser System

Unique capabilities of the AWA laser system include a multi-lens array (MLA) and a pulse multisplitter.

The AWA drive beamline is fed by a RF photoinjector using a combination of proprietary and custom built laser systems. During normal operation, this system can deliver 248 nm, 1.5ps-8ps FWHM, up to 5 mJ pulses at a repetition rate of 10 Hz to the photocathode. Unique capabilities of the AWA laser system include a multi-lens array (MLA) and a pulse multisplitter. The multi-lens array is generally used to improve laser spot unifomization on the cathode, thus improving beam quality or it can be used to create a transverse array of beamlets. A pulse multisplitter splits a single pulse into a series of up to 32 pulses. Furthermore, most beam transport occurs inside a high vacuum environment, reducing aberrations due to atmospheric conditions.
