The mission of Environmental Management (EM) is to complete the safe cleanup of the environmental legacy brought about from five decades of nuclear weapons development and government-sponsored nuclear energy research.
EM’s Minority Serving Institutions Partnership Program (MSIPP) offers internships to help develop our future workforce in critically important areas of science, engineering, technology, and mathematics (STEM). We invite you to help us tackle our unique and often unprecedented scientific and technical challenges, which are engaging some of the finest scientists and engineers in the nation.
The MSIPP was created by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Office of Environmental Management.
Program Overview
MSIPP summer internships take place at selected DOE national laboratories and last for about 10 weeks. Interns will complete research projects that are relevant to EM’s ongoing mission. Students will also be involved in enrichment activities provided by the host laboratory. These activities may include:
- Laboratory and on-site tours.
- Professional development seminars.
- Workshops.
- Lectures.
- Social or off-site activities.
NOTE: The laboratory is tentatively planning for student programs to be fully onsite during Summer 2023. However, a student’s workplace may shift to a hybrid or virtual status contingent upon local COVID infection rates. Student candidates will be notified of changes in the lab’s operational status at the time of offer and/or during their appointment.

Application Requirements
To apply for the MSIPP internship, applicants must:
- Be enrolled as a graduate student at an accredited Minority Serving Institution (MSI).
- Be pursuing a STEM degree.
- Have a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- Be a U.S. citizen.
- Pass a drug test upon selection to participate in an internship.
- Argonne employees, and certain guest researchers and contractors, are subject to particular restrictions related to participation in Foreign Government Sponsored or Affiliated Activities, as defined and detailed in United States Department of Energy Order 486.1A. You will be asked to disclose any such participation in the application phase for review by Argonne’s Legal Department.
Financial Information
Participants will be compensated by either a stipend or salary commensurate with the cost of living at the location of the host laboratory.
