Argonne Open House on May 20, 2023

At Argonne, our science and our scientists save lives. Our facilities power breakthroughs in medical research and treatments. Our expertise helps keep your family and your community safe and healthy.

At Argonne’s 2023 Open House, thousands of visitors met scientists and engineers who use giant particle accelerators and the world’s most advanced supercomputers to understand and treat diseases from cancer to traumatic brain injury.

Open House attendees learned how Argonne’s world-leading science facilities and equipment were used to develop vaccines, treatments, and protective equipment for the COVID-19 virus, and tried defeating the COVID-19 virus themselves in a virtual escape room.

Visitors saw how special particles called medical isotopes are helping fight cancer, and talked with educators and researchers that are helping better understand the effects of climate change on the people who live in Chicago.

Kids of all ages also tried on protective equipment in use every day at Argonne to keep people safe across a wide variety of jobs, from scientists working at the lab’s particle accelerators, to researchers assembling components in ultraclean laboratories, to the machinists building equipment in the lab’s Central Shops.
