Saving Our Planet

Argonne Open House May 20, 2023

Argonne scientists and engineers are at work every day helping to fight climate change, clean up the environment, and build a healthy and sustainable world for everyone.

At our 2023 Open House, visitors met researchers creating new clean-energy materials and technologies and engaged with dozens of activities showing how science helps save our planet.

They saw the inner workings of advanced batteries and talked to scientists developing advanced nuclear reactors to help meet our planet’s energy needs. At our learning center, hundreds of kids (of all ages) tried their hand at using artificial intelligence to improve recycling.

Cutting-edge research facilities that support researchers in their quest to fight climate change, build more resilient cities, and create a more sustainable planet were also open to visitors.

People toured the Materials Engineering Research Facility that helps accelerate the commercialization of innovative chemicals and materials. They visited the Smart Energy Plaza to see advanced electric vehicle charging and learn how electricity flows around the grid. And they saw how scientists conduct experiments to create the next generation of rail engines, automobiles and aviation fuels.
