Electrical Safety at ATLAS

Onsite Emergencies: Dial 911 on the internal phones (or dial 630-252-1911 on cell phones). For Non-Emergency safety concerns, email ATLASsafety@anl.gov.

Argonne and ATLAS have very specific requirements concerning working on or near electrical equipment.

Equipment Repairs

Do not work on equipment where current-carrying conductors or components at 50V or greater are exposed. Unplug the equipment first. Once unplugged, check the equipment to be sure there is no stored energy in it. Any capacitors must be drained before working on the equipment.

Repairs to equipment where exposure to voltages above 50V exist can be performed only by a qualified electrician. To arrange for repairs by an electrician, contact the User Liaison.

Report Your Electrical Equipment

Non-commercial equipment, including modified commercially manufactured equipment, must have appropriate engineered safeguards and must also be reported (e.g., as part of your experimental safety assessment) to the User Liaison in advance and made available for inspection, testing, and certification prior to use.

Extension Cord Safety

  • String extension cords overhead, at least 7 feet off the floor. Cords on the floor are a trip hazard.
  • Do not string extension cords together. Argonne forbids this practice due to the potential for overheating.
  • Make sure all equipment cords are in good condition—not frayed or otherwise damaged.
  • Report any uninsulated, or exposed wiring to your supervisor, the User Liaison or the Physics Division Safety Officer.
