Preparation for a dedicated lifetime array for sub-nanosecond excited states

Heavy Ion Discussion Group, 30 June 2023, 3:30 PM CST.

Title: Preparation for a dedicated lifetime array for sub-nanosecond excited states

Speaker: Walter Reviol, Argonne National Laboratory

The status of an initiative, to augment the Gammasphere and X-Array HPGe spectrometers with LaBr3 and CeBr3 scintillator detectors, to perform via electronic timing excited-state lifetime measurements for half-lives T1/2 ≤ 1 ns, will be discussed. Most of the scintillators are 1” ϕ x 1” crystals coupled to small, high-gain phototubes and voltage dividers. The units will be arranged, at the aforementioned spectrometers, in two different geometries, serving in-beam and decay experiments, respectively. The discussion will cover these aspects: (i) introduction and justification for a "lifetime array", (ii) design criteria and their realization, (iii) commissioning experiment and specifics of proposed follow-up experiments (iv) outlook: additional applications and community involvement.
