The Gammasphere Upgrade

Heavy Ion Discussion Group - 2 December 2022

Special two-session Heavy Ion Discussion Group

2:30 pm – 3:15 pm*

The Gammasphere Upgrade – Overview

Michael Carpenter and Patrick Copp, Argonne National Laboratory

The Gammasphere Upgrade project is an integrated, holistic approach upgrading all subsystems to address the concerns raised by the Gammasphere user community.  In so doing we have added new capabilities that will be of interest to all users when developing experiment proposals. This overview will give an introduction and review of Gammasphere at ATLAS and detail the issues that led to the upgrade and the solutions implemented through the project, as well as an update on the current status of the array.

3:30 pm – 4:15 pm

The Gammasphere Upgrade – Technical Aspects

John Anderson and Michael Oberling, Argonne National Laboratory

A detailed discussion of technical aspects of the Gammasphere Upgrade is given, elaborating on the new solutions, providing the high-level technical overview and their impact on the operation of Gammasphere. This includes a discussion of the electronics, firmware, and software that was developed for the upgraded signal processing and controls. New mechanical solutions are also discussed, including the power distribution infrastructure, the revised trigger system topology, and new tools for detector maintenance.

*We anticipate plenty of discussion and so aside from the start, the timelines are approximate
